Introduction

A penguin, active in summer of Antarctic, looks slow but is hard-working animal. The bird sits on a egg, breeds their baby through the summer and is off feeding all day. Won-young Lee, the ethologist who was crushed penguins, has researched, drawn and written down penguins.

Won-young Lee, the senior researcher of Korea Polar Research Institute(KOPRI), goes to Arctic in Summer, to Antarctic in Winter as a ethologist. His target in Antarctic is a penguin. He researches behavioral ecology of this bird.

In December to next February, Antarctic meets Summer as well. Antarctic is where the words ‘Summer’ and ‘warm’ would be used just because a thermometer reads above zero there. When Summer comes, five thousand pairs of Gentoo Penguin and Chinstrap Penguin gather at Narebski Point, called Penguin Town of King George Isalnd. They build their nests, hatch the eggs and breed.

At that time they save the short Summer to raise their babies, Dr. Lee stay at a state-run Korean research center in the Island and visit the Penguin Town day after day. What’s their breeding going to be this year? Wouldn’t Gentoo Penguin’s eggs hatch by now? The author documented the 43 days with penguins besides research as main business.
